The Los Angeles Class of SSNs is the largest Class of Submarines built by the U.S Navy since W.W.II. Since the launch of SSN 688 in 1976, 65 boats have been completed and launched. The 688 Class when launghed during the middle of the cold war were the largest Attack Boats ever, displacing 6297 metric tons. They were much quieter than anything in the Soviet arsenal and could trail Russian Boomers (SSBNs) on their entire patrols without the Russians knowing about it. The 688 Class have been divided into three categories: the 688s, the 688s with VLS (Vertical Launch System) and the 688I or Improved Los Angeles Class which have the VLS and their bowplaines mounted on the forward section of their hull, as opposed to the sail to give greater control at periscope depth and to make surfacing through ice alot easier. The armament of all the 688s comprises of the heavy Mk 48 ADCAP torpedo which is used usually against surface vessels and larger submarine units eg: Typhoon and Oscar class Missile Boats. The newer and lighter Mk 52 high speed torpedo is also carried, the Mk52 is a light fast torpedo capable of catching the latest generation of Soviet subs whilst still being to rupture a double hull. Both these torpedoes are fired from four 21" (533mm) torpedo tubes placed amidships. Harpoon anti-ship and Tomahawk cruise and SUBROC ASW missiles can also be launched from these tubes, or on newer boats, from the VLS which is specially designed to fire them. The U.S Navy discloses the top speed of the 688 Class at 30kts, but it is rumoured that they can exceed 40kts at Flank speed. While the older 688s will soon be retired from the fleet the newer boats still have many years of service ahead of them.
